Renshi Rick 7th Dan

Four Decades of Martial Arts

Renshi Rick Brisee’s martial arts journey began nearly four decades ago in a Kyokushin dojo back in 1982 but it was in 1986 that Renshi joined US Budokai and began to forge his own path to 7th degree black belt.  Renshi tested and was awarded sichidan (or sometimes referred to as nanadan) by Hanshi Russ Jarem on May 22, 2021.  US Budokai is honored to have Renshi Rick as a senior member of the dojo and head instructor in the kobudo (weapons) program.  His dedication and commitment to the arts is without question as is his “true student” mindset.  Oftentimes when students attain high rank their journey ends and they believe their “mastery” is enough.  Renshi is a perpetual student of the arts always seeking to grow his abilities, understanding and knowledge.

The higher in rank a student progresses the emphasis shifts from a mere physical toughness of being able to kick and punch well into a deeper knowledge of how to utilize ones skill; specifically, in the application (bunkai) of technique.  Renshi was tasked with not only demonstrating a deep understanding of the katas of our system but also a genealogy of those katas and US Budokai Karate, as we know it.

Some highlights of Renshi’s written assignment are below.

US Budokai can trace its lineage back as follows:

US Budokai Karate was founded in 1987 by Hanshi William Reid and Hanshi Russ Jarem.  Both Hanshi Reid and Jarem trained in the World Seido Organization, founded 1976 by Tadashi Nakamura.  Seido Karate

Nakamura trained in Kyokushin Karate which had been founded in 1964 by Mas Oyama.  Kyokushin Karate  Oyama’s training included Chinese Kempo, Shotokan and Gojo-Ryu.

Gojo-Ryu is one of the four recognized “original” styles of karate although Renshi asserted there should be five.  The other styles are Wado-Ryu, Shito-Ryo and Shotokan.  Shorin-Ryu however could be argued to pre-date all of them.  Nevertheless, all of the founding fathers were contemporaries and either trained together under the same teacher or students of each other.

Interestingly, all styles of karate are less than 90 years old having been founded between 1933 and 1936 with the exception of Shorin-ryu which can trace its origins even further back to China.

We have a handful of masters to thank for the arts but we have senior students, like Renshi Rick whose passion and dedication will keep them alive for generations to come.

Thank you Renshi and Congratulations!

Black Belt Test Weekend

CONGRATULATIONS NEW BLACK BELTS!

The weekend of March 20-21, 2021 marked not only the welcome of spring but an accomplishment few attain but all admire a black belt.

Join us in congratulating TEN new shodans, first-degree black belts to US Budokai Karate!

SHODAN
Don Fawthrop, Ivan Stebletsov, Trent Bruce, Aidan Smith, Kayla Smith, Veronica Smith, Lily Heffernan, Marissa Guetti, Katerina Tsakaloyannis, and Jack Baker!

Of note in the shodan, group is The Smith Family – Congratulations on three family members making rank at the same time!!

Even fewer students move on to higher dan (level) rank so we are extremely proud of the FIVE new Nidans, second-degree black belts!

NIDAN
Haley Miller, Chris Guetti, Jordan Whelchel, Randy Mysliwiec, Taylor Lanier

Students must be at least 14 years old to test for Nidan so it is no small feat for a student who starts as a Tiny Tiger (4-6 years old) to continue to Nidan.  We are extremely proud to acknowledge the commitment of Haley Miller, Jordan Whelchel, and Taylor Lanier – all Tiny Tiger alumni!! Way to go!

YONDAN
Sensei Walter McKay

Sensei Walter McKay
Congratulations Sensei Walter McKay

It is a rare student who stays until making the rank of 4th-degree black belt and earns the title Sensei.   Join me in congratulating Sensei Walter McKay on this phenomenal accomplishment.  Sensei began training at US Budokai in 2006 and exemplifies the extraordinary (15YR!) dedication to this landmark achievement.  Of note, Sensei Walter joins his wife, Sensei Nicole McKay as a US Budokai yondan (Mr. and Mrs. Sensei!!).

Hanshi Jarem put the students through kihon (karate basics), katas, and pre-arranged self-defenses.  No black belt exam would be complete without fighting!  These candidates had to fight their way through many rounds of bag work; tougher by some standards for sure but at least those bags weren’t hitting back!! The determination, conditioning, and spirit of these candidates were some of the best we’ve ever seen. All of these candidates stayed strong and committed to their training throughout COVID quarantine, training virtually, solo, and in the dojo.  By far they are each stronger inside and out having made this journey with US Budokai Karate.  CONGRATULATIONS FROM ALL OF US TO ALL OF YOU! OSU!

WaveMaster Workout

The Many Faces of the “New” Karate Dojo

At US Budokai Karate we pride ourselves on being modern-day martial artists, adept at adapting and rising to the challenges that life throws our way.  No one could have foreseen when we closed our doors on March 15, 2020, that it would be nearly 5 months before our students would return and the many faces the “new” karate dojo would wear until that day.

One thing we learned during this challenging time is that even old dogs can learn new tricks!  Adapting to the new technology and remote learning – US Budokai Karate, teachers, and students rose to the challenge!

COVID CHAPTER ONE

“Rise to the Challenge” became our mantra from the first day of COVID Quarantine and we saw dojo members relying on Daily YouTube Home Challenges to stay motivated (and in shape!).  The Dojo Home Challenges, created by Hanshi Jarem, Renshi Sue, and Sensei Mike, come in all flavors from basics and bag work to detailed kata lessons and sparring drills.  Our YouTube Library now boasts over 130 videos including the complete white to black belt curriculum and beyond!  This exclusive resource is available to all members.

COVID CHAPTER TWO

The US Budokai Karate ZOOM Classroom went live in May and the second chapter of COVID Quarantine allowed our instructors (to their great relief!) to once again regularly interact with students.  With ZOOM Class sizes-small, instructors are able to give feedback and instruction to virtual students.  Kyu rank students were tested via zoom by mid-May.  A Virtual Promotional is certainly an act “old-school” martial artists would have sworn would never happen!  Never say “never”! Rising to the Challenge again students embraced the opportunity to virtually train.

CURRENT CHAPTER…

Beginning in July we were finally clear to commence “live” classes. Stringent Safety Guidelines and Sanitization Protocols as well as a new Member Portal reservation system keep classes small and manageable.  Students enjoy 2-3 in-school training opportunities weekly.  All classes are age and rank specific to continually encourage members to be the best they can be! Each class has a high instructor to student ratio as well as a simultaneous ZOOM component for when students are not able to attend class in person.

Students train in a generous 100’sq ft area with a WaveMaster specifically assigned to them. There is no contact with others and members are able to maintain proper social distancing throughout the class.

TANDOKU

“Tandoku” – Japanese for “single” or “solo” training is our main focus today.  Solo work provides a unique opportunity to hone basic striking, kicking, and blocking skills.

Traditional kata (forms) practice has always been a large part of what is taught and preserved at US Budokai Karate.  What better time for students to take the opportunity to truly “own” and understand one kata (or more!).  In the early years of karate, students would often work on one kata alone for years to truly discover the depth of knowledge and self-defense application that lies hidden within!

Students challenge their endurance and skills with WaveMaster bag rounds and love to hear “get your gloves on”!  No workout contends with the energy required and the stress released with a great workout on the bag and no one better to coach you than the instructors at US Budokai Karate.

ROOTS REMAIN

Although the “faces” of karate may have changed, the roots remain!  Students at US Budokai learn to take challenges as opportunities; continue to rise as martial artists and, more importantly, to grow as individuals who persevere and adapt to our ever-changing world!

Rise to the Challenge
Our Mantra!
