On June 26th US Budokai Karate’s iaijutsu (swordmanship) school, known as Hangestsu Dojo (Half-Moon School) was honored to host the first post-COVID sword seminar with Chairman and So-Shihan of the Kokusai Nippon Budo Kai (KNBK), Carl Long Hanshi.
Hangestu Dojo is honored to be an affiliate dojo of the KNBK. The school teaches Muso Jikiden Eishin-Ryu Iaijutsu (MJER). Simply put, iaijutsu is the art of drawing the sword and this beautiful tradition can be traced back over 450 years. Detailed information about the KNBK, its founders and teachers as well as the history of MJER over the centuries can be found here: Kokusai Nippon Budo Kai click here
Students today study sword to sharpen their mind and character as well as their fighting skills.
Honbu Dojo, where you can find Long Sensei when he is not travelling, is one of the most traditional and beautiful dojos I’ve ever had the opportunity to train at. Even a glimpse of the garden is worth the trip to Kingston, PA! You can visit Sensei’s Dojo here: Sakura Budokan
Over the weekend we were pleased to host members from other affiliates – East Coast KNBK Dojos including:
We were pleased to also welcome new friends – members from Byakkodan Dojo of New York, NY who study Toyama Ryu. It’s always wonderful to share new experiences with fellow swordsmen!!
A hard day’s training and “skinship” (to quote Sensei) was had by everyone. For me, a new and even deeper appreciation has formed for my fellow budoka. I can’t wait until the next time!
A BIG CONGRATULATIONS must be extended to my long-time students Maureen Skinner and Edward Sean Buckley for their advancement to Shodan-Ho!! Well done!
