Shihan-dai

Five New Shihan-dai!

The achievement of a fifth-degree black belt, known in karate as the rank of Godan, is extraordinary on its own; for five members of the same school to achieve such an elite rank is unheard of.  But that is exactly what transpired on Saturday, November 6, 2021 when five sensei’s, who embarked on their martial arts journey nearly 20 years ago,  reached a level which few ever do, Shihan-Dai.

Shihan-dai can be translated to “assistant professor” or one who can instruct in place of the master.

In testing for this esteemed rank, each of these individuals proved their ability to uphold this position with a unique challenge.  The candidates were tasked with learning a kata outside of the Budokai system, presenting its lineage, style, performing it, teaching the kata and its underlying application (known as “bunkai”) to the other candidates and seniors in attendance.  Additionally, their knowledge and mastery of the Budokai system was required as well.  No small task!

Shihan-dai William Augustine presented on Naihanchi Kata (Tekki).  The kata is considered one of the oldest kata.  On its surface, the kata may seem simple but it is meant for close-range grappling and strong striking.  It takes years of study to aptly apply power to this kata.  Interestingly most styles incorporate Sanchin Kata or Naihanchi but not both.  US Budokai students practice Sanchin kata.

Shihan-dai Nicole McKay instructed the group on Jion Kata.  “Jion” meaning “temple sound” goes back to the Buddhist temple of Jion-Ji.  The tai sabaki (body movement) employed in the Wado-ryu version of this form, which continues to be practiced by many styles today, seeks efficiency of movement and to ride, flow or dodge an attack rather than meeting it head-on.

Shihan-dai Tanya Rautine brought to us, Paiku.  Paiku is one of the 8 kata of the Ryuei Ryu system.  The style was hidden from the world due to family tradition until 1971.  A relatively unknown system, its foremost practitioner, Tsuguo Sakumoto held the World Karate Federation Championship from 1984-1988 in his late thirties.   Performance video of Sakumoto Sensei can be seen here: Paiku This is a beautiful kata and one which Shihan-dai Tanya has brought to the US Budokai competition team to add to its repertoire.

Shihan-dai Frank Esposito chose Hangetsu Kata, from the Shotokan system, a variation of Seisan, an old kata with a deep lineage.  “Hangetsu” means half-moon and is called such for its crescent-like steps and hand movements.  Hangetsu is very effective for close-in attacks and unbalancing an attacker.  Hangestu uses breathing and breath control much like our Sanchin kata.

Shihan-dai Dan Chouiniere resurrected Bassai-dai for us.  There was a short time when this kata was part of the Budokai curriculum!  Like many kata it can trace its roots back to China and is practiced in many variations today.  Insofar as the kata is practiced with such a variety, so then are its applications whether gross movements or finer more subtle movement – it encourages the student to seek a deeper understanding when comparing.  Shihan-dai aptly pointed out that the longer one studies the more the windows of understanding open and the gifted practitioner learns to improvise and create his own “music” of application.

To have these five martial artists join the elite ranks at US Budokai is an incredible honor and we congratulate them with great pride and thank them for their long-standing dedication.  When you see them, please congratulate them and don’t forget the new title “Shihan-dai”!

We now have twelve members of our dojo ranked at 5th-degree black belt or above.  This speaks so highly of the organization built by Hanshi Russ Jarem, and the depth of knowledge US Budokai has to offer.  OSU!

Congrats Shihan-dai
Congratulations Shihan-dai

Sixteen Black Belt Candidates

Black Belt Testing Weekend!

Black Belt Testing Weekend brings with it the culmination of many years of training for sixteen worthy black belt candidates!

Eleven of those candidates will be testing for shodan (first-degree black belt) or jr. shodan (under 13).

A black belt is seen as the epitome of karate training and to many, the goal, the end of the road.  However, students who truly walk the path understand that a black belt is just the beginning.  Students who successfully achieve shodan will undergo a six (6) month probationary period before their black belt certificate is issued.  Black belt certificates differ from kyu rank (colored belt) certificates in that it bears the students photo and is specifically numbered and recorded with the organization.

Four of this weekend’s candidates will be testing for Nidan (second-degree black belt).

It has been said that a student isn’t considered serious by their sensei until at least second, if not third-degree black belt.  At shodan, a student has learned a solid level of basic skill.  For Nidan, the student has grown in understanding, ability, and has a deeper knowledge of applying those skills.

One candidate will test for yondan (fourth-degree black belt).

With the rank of yondan comes the title “Sensei”.  This individual has shown a mastery of skills, the ability to share his knowledge, and foremost, compassion.  For every ten thousand students that join a karate class, half will drop out the first month.  Of that five thousand, half will stay another month. Of those remaining, only one thousand will stay for six months and then quit.  Five hundred will study for a year, but only one shall go onto teaching others what they have learned.  A Sensei is one in ten thousand!

All afternoon classes will be canceled on Saturday, March 20, and all activities are canceled on Sunday, March 21.   There are no spectators for testing.  OSU!

New Black Belt!!

Being a “Black Belt” Parent!

What does it mean to be a black belt parent?

I have been teaching martial arts since 1985 when I began conducting introductory lessons for Hanshi Jarem.  In that 35 years’ time, I’ve had the opportunity to work with hundreds if not thousands of kids, from many different walks of life and raised with many different parenting styles.  I’ve had the unique opportunity to “grow up” in the martial arts, raise my own child in the dojo alongside Hanshi Jarem and his children (who all earned junior black belts and are now successful adults); and, witness the growth of so many other children into successful adulthood through karate.  Through that experience, I believe firmly that it takes as much commitment (if not more!) from a young student as it does from the parents to become a black belt.  Oftentimes, it’s due more to the parent’s perseverance, dedication, and commitment that a child earns a black belt.  But make no mistake, through your strong and loving parenting, by standing your ground through complaining, laziness, “boredom” and “burnout”, your child will transform into the best version of themselves.

“Not everyone will be a martial artist for life but the impact of earning a black belt will last a lifetime.”

I recently had the opportunity to read Black Belt Parenting, The Art of Raising Children for Success by Solomon Brenner.  An experienced martial artist and successful school owner himself, with the help of experienced educators and child psychologists, Mr. Brenner has compiled an extremely helpful read for any parent (with kids in karate or not)!!  Highly recommended!  I share some of his points below.

Mr. Brenner recommends taking “should” out of the conversation with your kids and I couldn’t agree more!

I have seen parents give control of their daily lives over to their children by allowing them to decide what is best.  In this scenario, everyone suffers.  Parents, trust your own wisdom.  Leave less room for uncertainty, especially in these uncertain times.  Take “you should go to class” out of the equation and phrase responsibility and commitments with “you will” and “you must”.  The decision is made by you, the experienced and wise parent.  Clearly, this applies to many areas in life – homework, chores, etc. … apply it freely!  “Before you can go with friends … you must finish cleaning your room!”

“Keeping the peace in the short term has its costs in the long run.”

Your child’s future is purchased by his or her present actions.  Remember this when you strive to outlast your child in an argument.  Building reliable habits, routines, standards, and activities provide security and stability.  This structure gives your child a sense of well-being and makes for a smoother running household.  Of course, things can happen outside of your control, leave room to adjust but stick to your guns!

Skirting responsibility now becomes a natural response to future problems and challenges.  Quitting is a learned response.  Quitting due to boredom, laziness, fear of failure, etc. allows current emotions to bar the way to future achievement.  When your child rebels in any area, he or she is looking for your guidance; for a firm and a loving hand.  If quitting or acting out due to these emotions becomes acceptable in the home, it becomes a learned response for life.

As adults, we understand that successful people give 100% even when they don’t feel like it.  Keep this in mind: feelings won’t change your actions but your actions will change your feelings.  Who hasn’t felt better after a workout, a great class, or achieving a goal?! Your child feels the same way!

Parents, it is not your job to be a friend, to let your child make the rules and decide what is best.  There will be plenty of time to be your child’s friend when they are adults and have shared some of your life experiences on their own.  They will thank you for your discipline then.  Parenting is the most difficult and the most rewarding job there is.  When we don’t maintain the boundaries and never say no, we are in effect quitting on our children.  Remember always, discipline is love.

When your child earns a black belt at US Budokai Karate, you have set the bar high in every way for the rest of their life.  You have stayed the course and will have the enjoyment of reaping a lifetime of reward!
