Leadership Habits!

Leadership students at US Budokai Karate build positive habits!

Finding a balance for healthy screen time is an important building block for good habits but can also be challenging for parents.

In this week’s extra credit challenge (Discipline Challenge #5), for five days in a row, students must turn off all screens by 7 pm!

There are positives and negatives to screen time.

Negatives:  too much sedentary time, obesity, poor social skills, poor vision, neck/back issues, depression/anxiety, and poor sleep (including insomnia in teenagers)!

Positives: promote learning, develop problem-solving skills, communication, social skills, and creativity.

How much is too much?

It is advised that children under 2 have zero screen time.  Two-to-five-year-olds should have no more than one hour per day.  Up to age 18…no more than two hours a day; including gaming, social media, and TV!

Good rules for screen time at home may include a specific amount of time/time of day with screens, what devices are allowed, what content is allowed, where in the house screens may be used, and where screens are stored when not in use.

General boundaries like no screens during meals, after 7 pm, or if homework needs to be done will help keep things on track at your home.

Limiting screen time helps to establish good habits early!

Unplugged Ninja by Mary Nhin was part of the students’ learning experience this week.  This book speaks in easy-to-understand language about how your child can learn to create better habits like Reset, Reconnect, and Relax for a “digital detox”!

LEADERSHIP is learning how to lead!

Leaders need to be able to communicate with confidence.  Confident communication happens when your child’s confidence is greater than their fear of being in front of others!

We have witnessed a big improvement in overall confidence and communication with Leadership students!

How do Leadership students advance?  Leadership will be ranked similarly to our karate belt rank system with students being awarded a “Leadership Club” patch at 50 classes (about 6 months) and colored chevron patches for every 50 classes as they progress towards the Assistant Instructor level.  Students Green Belt and higher will also receive credit for Leadership advancement each time they assist with a class.  Students who began assisting in 2021/2022 will receive credit for all classes they helped with since our return from COVID!!  Leadership patches will be proudly displayed on the right sleeve of your child’s uniform!

LEADERSHIP EXTRA CREDIT CHALLENGES AND RAFFLE!

Leadership students will be challenged beyond Gold Stripe Challenges on 7-8 topics each quarter.  We are currently working on DISCIPLINE and learning to build good habits.

You build your habits and then your habits build YOU!

Our first challenge is Nutrition!! Did your child try a new healthy food?  Do they regularly drink 6-8 glasses of water per day?  When the challenge is complete, drop your challenge “ticket” into the raffle basket for a chance to win an exciting prize!! This quarter we are raffling off 2 Cobra Kai/Karate Kid Themed Build-a-Bears!! The more challenges completed, the more chances to WIN!

US BUDOKAI KARTE TINY TIGERS MOVE AHEAD!

US BUDOKAI KARATE – Tiny Tiger Spring Testing saw 5 students advance!! CONGRATULATIONS!

Kids of all ages respond to reward systems and US Budokai Karate Tiny Tigers are no different.  In order to provide further positive reinforcement to Tiny Tiger students the next round of testing will include all current students who have a minimum of 10 classes since their last test!! This means that advancement opportunities will be given to all qualifying students every 3 months.  This aligns with the reward systems already in place at our JR, Teen, and Adult level programs.

The new belt system will be white, orange stripe, double orange stripe, gold stripe, double gold stripe, green stripe, double green stripe, purple stripe, and double purple stripe! US BUDOKAI KARATE LIFE SKILL CHALLENGES

US BUDOKAI KARATE LIFE SKILL: DISCIPLINE!

LEADERSHIP PROGRAM LAUNCHES!

Leadership is a life skill all martial arts schools profess to teach but US Budokai is taking this even further with a personal development program for kids and teens!  Within a framework of martial art skills, our program is specifically designed to challenge kids to engage publicly and improve upon their ability to speak and present themselves with peers, adults, and in public settings.  Being able to confidently speak up for oneself and others is a key life skill!

LEADERSHIP BEGINS MONDAY MAY 9TH!!
US BUDOKAI SCHEDULE _ MAY 2022
