US BUDOKAI KARATE LIFE SKILL CHALLENGES

US BUDOKAI KARATE LIFE SKILL: DISCIPLINE!

LEADERSHIP PROGRAM LAUNCHES!

Leadership is a life skill all martial arts schools profess to teach but US Budokai is taking this even further with a personal development program for kids and teens!  Within a framework of martial art skills, our program is specifically designed to challenge kids to engage publicly and improve upon their ability to speak and present themselves with peers, adults, and in public settings.  Being able to confidently speak up for oneself and others is a key life skill!

LEADERSHIP BEGINS MONDAY MAY 9TH!!
US BUDOKAI SCHEDULE _ MAY 2022

Students may register for Leadership before OR after their regular karate class in the Member App/Portal.

Quarter Two: DISCIPLINE, the second life skill pillar! Home Challenges sheets can be found here: HOME CHALLENGES _ DISCIPLINE Students may also submit an Intent to Promote form to be considered for a Gold Stripe! Disciplined people have good habits, stay focused and help at home! (All forms are also available at the dojo.)

Leadership is: Emphasis on the “Yes I Can” mentality

The Life Skill Pillars
Honor = Honesty, the first key to an abundant life
Discipline = Obey what is right and follow the rules
Communication = The link between me and the world
Respect = It’s not what you know, or what you have, it’s what you do

SPRING GRADUATION!!

Congratulations to everyone who advanced in rank following the April 27, 2022 Kyu Belt Testing!!  The official results are here!

Physical skills are always part of the challenge when advancing in karate but this quarter drew greater attention to our pillars!!

HONOR = Honesty, the first key to a happy life!

What more did we accomplish this quarter? We learned to present ourselves with honor and dignity and the importance of not looking sloppy – belt tie challenge!!

It is our goal to help our families create a happier, less stressed, home life – how did we do this … We brushed our teeth without a fuss, got our homework done without complaint, put our devices away without being asked twice, improved our table manners and went to bed and stayed in bed & MORE!!! When we keep the promises we make, everyone is happier!!!

Here are some other strategies for teaching Honor/Honesty in the home with your child: Psychology Today – Teaching Your Kids to be Honest

Wear your gi with pride!

Character Development is the Gold Standard!

US Budokai Karate is founded on these four pillars of virtue:  Honor, Discipline, Communication, and Respect.  “HDCR!!”  These character traits set the Gold Standard!

It is our goal to work diligently to support your child’s character development beyond the dojo walls.  With your help, we will strive to ensure that your child’s character is developing on three levels: internally, at home, and in the community/world.

Each quarter lessons and class discussions focus on one of the pillars.

Our current quarter (February – April testing cycle) is Honor.

Belt striping has been a regular part of our award system for physical skills – red stripe for kata, white stripe for self-defense, blue stripe for sparring skills, and a black stripe for “ready to test”.

Beginning this quarter, we are instituting the “Gold Standard”!!

What is the Gold Standard?  Gold stripes will be awarded for progress in character development!!

Each quarter 3 Gold Challenges will be issued! These challenges will be treated with equal importance as physical skills.

HONOR

Challenge #1 – Honorable people have dignity and wear their uniforms correctly!  Belt tying challenge!! Students must practice tying their own belts neatly and correctly 20 times (or as many as needed) and be able to demonstrate to earn a gold stripe!

Challenge #2 – Honest people keep promises.  For two weeks, your child must keep a promise at home to help correct bad behavior.
Suggestions:  Bedtime without a fuss, Getting up and ready without a fuss, bath time without a fuss, or completing a chore without being reminded.  Please use Challenge #2 to address what needs to change in your home!

A take-home sheet is available here: Honor Home Challenges for parents to sign and return OR you may let us know your child has earned a Gold Stripe and YOU the parent may have the honor of awarding the stripe while you are here at the dojo!!

Challenge #3 – Honorable people try their best at home AND school! All students must submit a “good” Intent to Promote form which includes positive feedback from home and school.  A “good” report reflects scores of 3 or above in each category. Available here: Intent to Promote

Intent to Promote for this quarter is due on April 4th

Parenting is a skill developed over time and we are here to support you every step of the way.  A great resource for parenting skills and suggestions is A Healthy Place! It truly takes a village to raise a child and we are honored to be a part of your village.

Team Budokai 2022 Winter Cup

The Value of Competition in Martial Arts

Unlike other sports, the average karate student doesn’t get a chance to perform in a weekly game or test of their martial arts abilities.  Competition Team gives students that chance!!

The competition challenges a students’ confidence and skills in kata (forms), kobudo (weapons), kumite (sparring), and board breaking events.

Competition is not just about winning at all costs and there is much more to be gained from the experience than medals and trophies.  Kids today are exposed to so many of the wrong ideas about competition – just consider the disturbing results and controversy in women’s figure skating from the 2022 Winter Olympics: Time.com Women’s Figure Skating.  We can certainly set a better example of what true and fair competition is and should be.

The added commitment of Competition Team Training should be taken seriously but the friendships that form are also a lot of fun!

The benefits that develop from putting yourself out there cannot be underestimated!!

Competition Team Training Fridays 6:15-7:30 PM beginning March 4, 2022.

We hope this earlier time encourages greater participation!!  Students YELLOW BELT and above may participate in Competition Team Training and try 2 team practices without obligation.  Please stop by the front desk with any questions you may have or to register for team!

Please book into the class with the Member Portal or App for class credit.  This is NOT a makeup class for regular classes.  Effective April 1, 2022, a $25 monthly add-on program fee will be charged to all Team Participants.

Join NOW and be ready to compete at the April 30th Capital District Open! Affiliated with the renowned North East Open, this event is geared towards our first-time competitors! The same organization, family spirit, friendly atmosphere and focus on camaraderie as the North East Open, in a small hometown package! This event is also a part of the 518 Martial Arts Competition Circuit earning member competitor’s points towards end-of-year awards!
