Leadership Habits!

Leadership students at US Budokai Karate build positive habits!

Finding a balance for healthy screen time is an important building block for good habits but can also be challenging for parents.

In this week’s extra credit challenge (Discipline Challenge #5), for five days in a row, students must turn off all screens by 7 pm!

There are positives and negatives to screen time.

Negatives:  too much sedentary time, obesity, poor social skills, poor vision, neck/back issues, depression/anxiety, and poor sleep (including insomnia in teenagers)!

Positives: promote learning, develop problem-solving skills, communication, social skills, and creativity.

How much is too much?

It is advised that children under 2 have zero screen time.  Two-to-five-year-olds should have no more than one hour per day.  Up to age 18…no more than two hours a day; including gaming, social media, and TV!

Good rules for screen time at home may include a specific amount of time/time of day with screens, what devices are allowed, what content is allowed, where in the house screens may be used, and where screens are stored when not in use.

General boundaries like no screens during meals, after 7 pm, or if homework needs to be done will help keep things on track at your home.

Limiting screen time helps to establish good habits early!

Unplugged Ninja by Mary Nhin was part of the students’ learning experience this week.  This book speaks in easy-to-understand language about how your child can learn to create better habits like Reset, Reconnect, and Relax for a “digital detox”!
