Karate as Girl Power?
On September 28, US Budokai Karate senior member Maureen Skinner achieved her third degree black belt. Senpai Maureen is a fabulous role model and our biggest cheerleader when it comes to “girl power”. As part of her promotional examination, Senpai Maureen was asked to give a presentation as to why she thinks karate is “girl power”. Here is what she had to say:
We come to the dojo for training
And say “OSU!” to fellow students we see
We focus, we learn, we concentrate
Building skills as we sweat in our gi
Skills that help keep our wits about us
Strengthen both our brains and bodies alike
Growing confident in our abilities
To be able to both block and to strike
Karate is more than the “kid” and the “chop”
It is about endurance and keeping ourselves fit
Plus it’s as much about creating a positive self-image
As it is learning how to avoid getting hit
We work out together to develop our form
Both male and female the same
Equality is affirmed in all that we do
Creating warriors is the name of the game
But in fact, girls are generally weaker than boys
With less muscle and bulk to protect
Though speed and agility are in our favor
And can be used to obtain proper respect
So although karate workouts benefit both genders
To develop poise, confidence, and control
I believe these skills are of most value to women
And why the cheer “Girl Power!” I often extol!
