Wear your gi with pride!

Character Development is the Gold Standard!

US Budokai Karate is founded on these four pillars of virtue:  Honor, Discipline, Communication, and Respect.  “HDCR!!”  These character traits set the Gold Standard!

It is our goal to work diligently to support your child’s character development beyond the dojo walls.  With your help, we will strive to ensure that your child’s character is developing on three levels: internally, at home, and in the community/world.

Each quarter lessons and class discussions focus on one of the pillars.

Our current quarter (February – April testing cycle) is Honor.

Belt striping has been a regular part of our award system for physical skills – red stripe for kata, white stripe for self-defense, blue stripe for sparring skills, and a black stripe for “ready to test”.

Beginning this quarter, we are instituting the “Gold Standard”!!

What is the Gold Standard?  Gold stripes will be awarded for progress in character development!!

Each quarter 3 Gold Challenges will be issued! These challenges will be treated with equal importance as physical skills.

HONOR

Challenge #1 – Honorable people have dignity and wear their uniforms correctly!  Belt tying challenge!! Students must practice tying their own belts neatly and correctly 20 times (or as many as needed) and be able to demonstrate to earn a gold stripe!

Challenge #2 – Honest people keep promises.  For two weeks, your child must keep a promise at home to help correct bad behavior.
Suggestions:  Bedtime without a fuss, Getting up and ready without a fuss, bath time without a fuss, or completing a chore without being reminded.  Please use Challenge #2 to address what needs to change in your home!

A take-home sheet is available here: Honor Home Challenges for parents to sign and return OR you may let us know your child has earned a Gold Stripe and YOU the parent may have the honor of awarding the stripe while you are here at the dojo!!

Challenge #3 – Honorable people try their best at home AND school! All students must submit a “good” Intent to Promote form which includes positive feedback from home and school.  A “good” report reflects scores of 3 or above in each category. Available here: Intent to Promote

Intent to Promote for this quarter is due on April 4th

Parenting is a skill developed over time and we are here to support you every step of the way.  A great resource for parenting skills and suggestions is A Healthy Place! It truly takes a village to raise a child and we are honored to be a part of your village.
